Creating Positive Communication for Positive Outcomes with your patients, and keeping your patience.
The recent workshop for 27 local NHS physiotherapists was a great eye opener for all who attended.
The basis for the workshop was communication and in particular how to get past negative post hypnotic suggestions that the patients often bring with them to their sessions.
Imagine for instance you are due to have an operation and shortly before you are told "This is very serious surgery and there are risks attached to it. It will be painful and it will be several weeks or more before you'll be comfortable. Your recovery and physiotherapy sessions will be hard work"
As more than one of the physiotherapists said you really would not want the operation. All you would be thinking about is the pain before and after and the risks involved. Not the state that you want to be creating pre-op.
Now imagine that the same surgeon said to you “This is serious surgery and there are a few risks; however we have a highly trained and experienced team looking after you both now and after. Some people have a little pain afterwards, but it may well be less than expected. You'll be up and about before you know it with the help and support of your physiotherapist."
